Step One - Fully understand what the exam requirements are. What exactly is your child gong to be tested on.
Step Two- Know the standard your child needs to be working at. Reviewing past papers and school practice papers are extremely useful. However, do be aware if your child is preparing for 7+ and 8+ exams in the super selective London schools, the specimen papers from schools will be in a style typical to a specific school, but the academic level presented in the papers are typically lower then expected.
Step Three - Be Careful not to purchase too many resources at the same time. It is very easy to find yourself drowning in resources and then you can easily become confused about which product to use.
Step Four - Use a variety of resources. Preparation can be tiresome and children are not machines. They need to stimulated and learn in a variety of ways. Ensure you use as many different resources as possible. Games, online materials and paper based materials when used together can be extremely effective.
Step Five - Where possible, use materials which are specific to the exams your child is undertaking. There are many specific 7+, 8+ and 11+ materials and games available.
