The School Appeals Process

If everything did not go to plan on National Offer Day, you are not alone, many families do not secure a place at their preferred school. You can appeal the decision and help is available to guide you through this process. Below are two expert organisations who could support you.

Support families with school admissions and appeals procedures. Check out their Appeals Guide to better understand what is involved:

  • Understanding the Appeals Process

  • Knowing what to ask the Admission Authority in advance of the Hearing

  • Preparing your appeal statement

  • Preparing for the Appeal Hearing itself

  • Understanding your options after your appeal

School Select are currently offering a free and without obligation assessment of your own specific appeal.

Contact them on office@schoolselect.co.uk and mention Success Index.

My Education Appeal

Empower parents to be able to appeal to the schools their children need and deserve to get the right education.

Founder, Mr. Jeynes, spent time as a Clerk for School Appeal hearings, listening to appeals where parents had excellent reasons to appeal—they just articulated them the wrong way.

In 2025, he founded My Education Appeal Ltd to bring hands-on experience to the process, helping to write the winning argument and deliver the best appeals at the hearings.

Focus for March

4+ preparation

This is the month to get outside, investigate the seasons - flood your child with seasonal language. There are lots of activities - collecting, cutting, sticking…

Make sure your child is being introduced to books - is able to hold a book and turn the pages independently.

Introduce numbers 1 to 10 and make sure they can recognise them and are beginning to write them. This writing can be completed in chalk, on whiteboards, in sand, even made with playdoh.

7+ - 13+ exams

March is the time to buckle down.

If you’re using a tutor, make sure you’re having regular communication with them. Your child’s first formal assessment should have taken place in February half term. There is absolutely no need for this to be in a tuition centre or a paid mock. It is perfectly acceptable for this to have taken place in your home under exam conditions. The purpose is to gently introduce your child to formal exams.

Using the information gathered from the mock exam, your tutor (or you if you are self teaching) will be able to identify gaps and learning. Be mindful at this point that some of these gaps may be because the content hasn’t been taught but look specifically for gaps where content has been covered.
- Why is your child not retaining this information?
- Do they need more regular repetition of key concepts?

Look at the key areas individually - comprehension, writing, VR - and pick reasoning into specific types. By looking at these areas individually you’ll be able to gather a fuller picture of how your child performs in each part. This will help you to be accurate in understanding what they can actually do and where they need to practice. Make a timetable for March, it’s a busy month - Mother’s Day, Easter activities creeping in and the excitement of lighter evenings which can all lead to the month disappearing and very little work being completed.

Make March matter by having a tight timetable, be realistic - look at your key dates and remember little and often is the key.
