London Independent School Entrance Exams: A Parent's Guide

Unlike many other parts of the UK, the London independent school entrance exam system operates in its own unique world. For families navigating London school admissions, one of the biggest challenges is that there isn't a single entrance exam accepted by every school.

Instead, each school has its own admissions process, with different exam formats, assessment styles, registration deadlines, interview stages and entry points, including 7+, 8+, 11+ and 13+ admissions. Keeping track of everything can quickly become overwhelming.

Stay Organised Throughout the Admissions Process

Success in the London independent school admissions process begins with organisation.

We strongly recommend that families:
- Identify their target schools as early as possible.
- Keep an up-to-date calendar of application deadlines, exam dates and interview schedules.
- Regularly check each school's latest entrance exam requirements.

This is particularly important because schools frequently update their admissions procedures.

For example, St Paul's School has recently removed its 8+ entrance exam, placing even greater demand on places at the 7+ entry point. Westminster School has moved to co-education, while King's College School has also introduced significant changes to its admissions process.

Staying informed can make a real difference to your preparation and planning.

Your London School Admissions Checklist

We recommend keeping a dedicated admissions folder, either digital or printed, with all of your important information in one place, including:

- Registration deadlines
- Entrance exam dates
- School prospectuses
- Exam requirements
- Interview information
- Practice schedules
- Application confirmations

Having everything organised and easily accessible helps reduce stress, keeps your family in control, and allows you to approach the admissions journey with greater confidence and peace of mind.
