What to Focus on in November: A practical 5-minute guide for 11+ families

November is a pivotal month in the 7+ and 11+ entrance exam journey.

For some families, particularly those preparing for London 7+ and 11+ entrance exams, the exam season is already underway. For others, including families preparing for Gloucestershire and Manchester entrance exams and the FSCE, November provides a valuable opportunity to make real progress before December arrives.

Once again, there are two very different routes this month.

Whichever route your family is following, November is about routine, focused preparation and making every session count.

Route One: London Families – You're in the Middle of It!

For many London 7+ and 11+ families, November means entrance exam season is well and truly here.

Some children will already have completed assessments. Others will have exams, interviews and second-stage assessments approaching.

At this point, routine is your friend.

This is not the time to suddenly change everything, introduce huge amounts of new material or panic because another parent tells you their child is doing something different.

You know your child. You know your target schools. Stick to your plan.

Keep Practice Focused

With exams underway, every piece of preparation should have a purpose.

Look carefully at your child's recent work and ask:

- Where are they still losing marks?

- Is it 11+ Maths accuracy or problem solving? English comprehension? Vocabulary? Creative writing? Verbal Reasoning? Non-Verbal Reasoning? Time management? Exam technique?

Identify the gaps and target them.

A child completing endless papers without reviewing their mistakes isn't necessarily making progress.

At this stage, quality beats quantity.

Don't Forget Interview Preparation

For many London independent schools, the entrance exam is only one part of the admissions process.

November is therefore an important month for 7+ and 11+ interview preparation.

But interview preparation shouldn't mean teaching your child a collection of rehearsed answers.

Schools want to meet your child.

Help them become comfortable talking to unfamiliar adults. Encourage them to discuss their interests, books they've enjoyed, school life, hobbies and things happening in the world around them.

Practise answering questions thoughtfully, speaking clearly and having a genuine conversation.

Confidence is useful. Authenticity is even more important.

Protect Your Child's Routine

Exam season can quickly take over family life.

Try to maintain normality.

Regular meals. Good sleep. Exercise. School. Friends. Downtime.

And preparation.

A child who is exhausted from school, tutoring, revision, mock exams and interview practice is unlikely to demonstrate their true ability.

Keep them moving forward – but keep them fresh.

Route Two: Time to Knuckle Down

For families whose exams are further away, November presents a completely different opportunity.

This is the month to knuckle down.

December will arrive surprisingly quickly – bringing Christmas activities, school events, family commitments, disrupted routines and increasingly excited children.

November gives you several relatively uninterrupted weeks to establish strong habits and make accelerated progress.

Use them.

Get Your 11+ Routine in Place

By now, your child's 11+ preparation routine should be beginning to take shape.

That doesn't mean hours of work every evening.

It means consistency.

Decide when preparation will happen each week and make it part of normal family life.

Short, focused sessions completed consistently can be far more productive than occasional marathon sessions.

If you're working with an 11+ tutor, make sure you understand what they expect your child to complete between lessons.

If you're preparing independently, have a clear weekly plan covering the skills your child actually needs to develop.

Gloucestershire & Manchester FSCE Families – Build Strong Foundations

For families preparing for the FSCE in Gloucestershire or Manchester, November is particularly valuable.

The preparation window is shorter, so these weeks matter.

There is understandably considerable discussion around the wider curriculum within the FSCE, but don't allow that to distract you from developing excellent foundations.

Strong English and Maths remain essential.

Continue building:

- English: reading, vocabulary, comprehension, inference, spelling, grammar and confident interpretation of information.

- Maths: arithmetic, number fluency, mathematical reasoning, problem solving and applying knowledge to unfamiliar questions.

Your child will ultimately need to draw upon a broader range of knowledge, but they need the literacy and numeracy skills to understand, interpret and answer those questions successfully.

Broaden their knowledge – but don't neglect the foundations.

Is Your Tutor the Right Tutor?

November is also a sensible point to assess whether your current 11+ or FSCE preparation is working.

Is your child making progress?

Does your tutor understand their individual strengths and weaknesses?

Is preparation targeted?

Does your tutor have genuine experience with the assessment style your child will face?

Remember: although the FSCE may be new to many Gloucestershire and Manchester families, this style of assessment isn't necessarily new to experienced tutors who have prepared children for similar entrance examinations elsewhere in the UK.

Don't choose a tutor simply because everyone else is using them.

Choose the right tutor for your child and their exam.

Make Progress Before December

Your goal for November should be simple:

- Finish the month stronger than you started it.

- Establish your routine.

- Identify the gaps.

- Strengthen 11+ English and Maths.

- Build vocabulary.

- Read regularly.

- Develop problem-solving skills.

- Introduce appropriate timed work.

- Broaden knowledge gradually.

- And maintain momentum.

Then, when December arrives and routines inevitably become more difficult, your child has strong foundations to fall back on.

Your November Checklist

For families currently sitting London 7+ and 11+ entrance exams, November is about:

- Routine. Focus. Exam technique. Interview preparation. Rest.

- Don't panic. Don't suddenly overload your child. Target the remaining gaps and help them arrive at each assessment rested, confident and ready to perform.

For families preparing for exams next year, including Gloucestershire 11+, Manchester 11+ and FSCE families, November is about:

- Routine. Consistency. Foundations. Accelerated progress.

- Use this quieter period before Christmas to move preparation forward.

And whichever route you're on, don't judge your preparation by what another family is doing.

The best preparation is not necessarily the child doing the most work, attending the most courses or seeing the most tutors.

It's the child doing the right work, at the right time, for the right reasons.
