What should my child be doing for the Gloucestershire 11+ now?

For children preparing for the Gloucestershire Grammar Schools Entrance Test, two areas deserve particular attention at this stage, Reading and Maths.

These are skills that take time to develop properly. They cannot easily be crammed into the final few months before an 11+ exam.

Make reading a priority

One of the best things you can do for your child's 11+ preparation is wonderfully straightforward, encourage them to read.

And read lots.

Choose high-quality books that stretch them slightly beyond their comfort zone. Explore different authors, genres and styles. Include fiction and non-fiction.

Reading regularly helps children develop vocabulary, reading comprehension, inference, spelling and language skills – all enormously valuable for the 11+ and, importantly, for their education generally.

Talk about books too.

What does an unfamiliar word mean? Why did a character behave that way? What clues has the author given us? What might happen next?

Those little conversations develop the deeper comprehension skills that children need to become confident readers.

What will the paper look like? What types of questions will appear? How should children prepare?

For now, be cautious about rumours and speculation.

Wait for the detailed guidance and familiarisation information before changing your child's preparation dramatically.

There will be time to become familiar with the new test once reliable information is available.

Until then, reading, vocabulary, comprehension, mathematical fluency and problem-solving are never wasted preparation.
