When Are Gloucestershire 11+ Results Out? What Parents Need to Do Next

If your child sat the Gloucestershire 11+ exam in September 2026, there is probably one question dominating your thoughts right now:
When are the Gloucestershire 11+ results out?
Officially, Gloucestershire 11+ results are released before 31 October, ahead of the secondary school application deadline.
In reality, results are normally released considerably earlier than this — typically around mid-October and a good week before the October half-term holiday.
That timing is important.
It gives families time to understand their child's result and, where schools offer them, attend post-results visits or events before making their final secondary school choices.
Gloucestershire 11+ Results: What Happens If Your Child Qualifies?
First of all, congratulations!
But there is an important distinction every parent needs to understand:
Qualifying for a Gloucestershire grammar school is not the same as being guaranteed a place.
Once the Gloucestershire 11+ results arrive, your next job is to understand exactly what your child's result and ranking mean.
This has become particularly important because admissions policies differ between Gloucestershire grammar schools.
If you shared your child's 11+ result with several grammar schools, you may find that your child's position or ranking is different from school to school.
Don't assume that because your child has qualified for one school, their position will be identical at another.
Look Out for Invitations From Grammar Schools
The period between 11+ results day and the October half-term can be extremely useful.
Some grammar schools may invite qualifying families back into school for another visit or admissions event.
If you receive an invitation, go.
You have probably already attended an open day, but this visit has a very different purpose.
You're no longer asking:
"Could I see my child at this school?"
You're now asking:
"What does my child's ranking mean, and what should I do next?"
This is your opportunity to speak to the school, understand its admissions policy and establish what your child's particular 11+ ranking means.
Questions to Ask After Receiving Your Gloucestershire 11+ Results
Don't leave the event without asking the questions that matter.
Ask:
What does my child's rank mean in practice?
How many places are available?
Does qualifying mean my child is realistically in contention for a place?
How does this year's admissions policy affect my child's ranking?
Historically, how far down the rankings has the school been able to offer places?
Is there anything important I need to understand before completing my secondary school application form?
Your aim should be to leave with a full understanding of your child's position and what you need to do next.
What If Your Child Didn't Get the 11+ Result You Hoped For?
If the email doesn't contain the result you were hoping for, your route is slightly different.
It can be incredibly disappointing after months of 11+ preparation, but don't make rushed decisions about your secondary school application.
Instead, go back to your school choices.
Look carefully at the schools you would genuinely be happy for your child to attend and understand the admissions criteria for each one.
Gloucestershire operates an Equal Preference system, which means schools don't know whether you've listed them first, second or fifth.
Your preference order matters when the council determines which school to offer if your child qualifies for more than one of your choices.
If your child has not qualified for a particular grammar school, check that school's current admissions policy carefully before using one of your preferences on it. Don't assume that simply putting a grammar school on the application form makes your child eligible for a place.
And importantly, make good use of your other preferences.
How Should I Complete My Gloucestershire Secondary School Application?
Once you have your Gloucestershire 11+ results, you have a relatively short window to make your final decision. Use it!
Visit schools where possible.
Speak to admissions teams.
Understand your child's ranking.
Read the current admissions policies.
Consider journey times and whether the school is genuinely right for your child.
Then put your schools on the application form in your genuine order of preference.
Gloucestershire allows parents to list up to five secondary schools, and families should think carefully about using all of those preferences.
Don't Miss the 31 October Deadline
Whatever your child's Gloucestershire 11+ result, there is one date every Year 6 parent needs to remember: 31 October 2026.
This is the deadline for submitting your secondary school application for September 2027 entry.
Even if your child achieves an excellent Gloucestershire grammar school ranking, you still need to include the grammar school on your secondary school application.
So when that long-awaited 11+ email finally arrives, don't focus solely on whether your child has "passed".
Instead:
Understand the result.
Understand the ranking.
Ask the right questions.
Understand each school's admissions policy.
Then make an informed secondary school application.
The 11+ result is an important milestone — but knowing what to do with that result is just as important.
